Portrait of Prof. Tara E. Brendle FRSE

After receiving her Ph.D. from Columbia University in New York, Tara was a VIGRE Assistant Professor at Cornell University and later held a position as an Assistant Professor at Louisiana State University, before moving to Glasgow in 2008, where she is now a Professor. In 2021, Tara was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and was awarded the Senior Whitehead Prize.

Tara’s work is in geometric group theory, an area that lies in the intersection of algebra and low-dimensional topology. She is particularly interested in mapping class groups of surfaces, including braid groups, and their relationship to automorphism groups of free groups and arithmetic groups.
