Dr Alistair Robert Wallis

Alistair is an Associate Professor in the Department of Actuarial Mathematics and Statistics at Heriot-Watt University. After completing a PhD in algebra and category theory at Heriot-Watt in 2013, he worked at AIMS-Ghana for a year as a teaching assistant before taking up a lectureship at the Malaysia campus of Heriot-Watt in 2014 and subsequently moving to the Edinburgh campus in 2022. While in Malaysia, he held several leadership roles in the School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences and also completed the CT1 – CT9 examinations of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries. In recent years, he has become increasingly interested in developments in mathematics and statistics education, including automated assessment and the use of technology in teaching. Alistair is also passionate about access to education and in curriculum design
