Dr Scott Harper

Scott Harper is an EPSRC Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of St Andrews, working in group theory. Scott received his PhD from the University of Bristol in 2019 and has previously held research fellow positions in Bristol and Padua.

His research focusses on abstract groups (such as generating sets and subgroup structure), group actions (such as derangements and bases of permutation groups) and the connection between the two. His work is closely related to representation theory, geometric group theory, Lie theory and combinatorics. Lately, he has become involved in formalising proofs in Lean, and he is also interested in mathematics education and the philosophy of mathematical practice.
